Skaftfell Art Center in Seyðisfjörður
Inside a quiet timber building in Seyðisfjörður, the Skaftfell Art Center Seyðisfjörður holds more than art – it holds time. Late afternoons bring in visitors with damp jackets and quiet footsteps. There’s no rush. The gallery lights glow soft against the rain-darkened windows. Conversations drop to a whisper – or stop altogether. This center has become a rhythm of the town. Not daily. Seasonal. The exhibits shift slowly, like the sky outside – sometimes vivid, sometimes grey, always deliberate. Skaftfell moves at its own pace, and invites you to do the same.
Art, Space, and Locality
Skaftfell is more than a gallery – though it is a gallery, too. Its white rooms frame contemporary works by Icelandic and international artists. Yet the building also includes:
- a café space that hums quietly during openings
- a reading room with art books and notebooks left behind
- the Dieter Roth Library upstairs, viewable by request
- and staff who know the stories behind each installation
It was established in memory of artist Dieter Roth, who lived in Seyðisfjörður for many years. His spirit – layered, playful, slightly chaotic – still flickers here. Not always visibly.
Artist Residencies and Public Programs
The Skaftfell Art Center runs one of the most respected artist-in-residence programs in East Iceland. Participants are invited to work, exhibit, and – just as importantly – slow down.
Public events include:
- informal studio visits
- small group workshops
- lectures on art and ecology
- collaborative exhibitions with schools
- cross-programming with the LungA festival
There’s no firm wall between artist and audience. One morning you see a work half-finished. Two days later, it changed – subtly or completely.
Visiting Skaftfell
Located near the heart of Seyðisfjörður, Skaftfell is open most days – but not always predictably. Schedules bend to seasons, installations, and, sometimes, weather.
What to expect:
- Admission is free; donations are welcome
- The café serves simple local food and coffee
- Events are listed on the town’s noticeboard and windows
- Opening hours vary, so check ahead
- The Roth Library requires advance notice
You might step inside by accident. Stay longer than planned. Or leave without saying a word. Skaftfell doesn’t ask for reaction – only presence.
