The long calm, deep fjord of Seyðisfjörður twists and turns 17 kilometres from its mouth to the head of the fjord, where the town of the same name shelters beneath Mt. Strandartindur (1010 m)  and Mt. Bjólfur (1085 m). Seyðisfjörður is one of the imposing fjords in east Iceland. In the walley above the town, the river Fjarðará cascades from the edge of the heath above in innumerable beautiful waterfalls; down to Lón (the lagoon) at the head of the fjord. A road leads up from the fjord, along by the river, to the Hérað district ( Egilsstaðir) 26. km away across Fjarðarheiði heath. The route (Stafirnir) down into Seyðisfjörður by the FJarðará river is one of Iceland’s most spectacular roads. 

Today about 750 people live in Seyðisfjörður. The local economy has long been based on the fisheries, while light industry also florishes. Tourism is playing a growing role, as the picturesque town its spectacular surroundings attracts more and more visitors. Seyðisfjörður is on Lonely planet’s top list for “must visit” destinations in Iceland.

The information Centre is at the Ferry terminal, where the car- and passanger ferry Norrona docks every week, year round. It’s open mon-fri from 09:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 - 17:00 . It’s also open when Norrona docks and during the stay of a cruise ship.

At the information center one will find booklets from all around the country, hiking maps and road maps, stamps, postcards and telephone cards. There are several public telephones at the center, a wireless internet free of charge for guests, a small suvernir shop and café open when ships are docking. Wc for man, woman and disables. A waiting room for Norrona’s passengers and FAS bus passengers.

Within the reserve there are at least 90 archaeological sites which are thought to be evidence of continuous habitation of the land in this area since the settlement of Iceland over 1000 years ago. Many of the remains are now covered with vegetation and make the perfect place to rest for a while and contemplate the subsistence lifestyles of the people that lived from these lands.

The reserve has within it habitats and ecosystems representative of the East fjords region including all the common species of flora and fauna you might expect plus a few rarities.

Wander a few minutes from the door and you are either on the beach, staring in awe at the sea bird colonies on the cliffs or surrounded by wild flower meadows and that is just around the house – the rest of the reserve has many natural spectacles for you to discover including waterfalls, snowfields, reindeer, interesting geological formations and a large arctic tern colony.

A sightseeing tour lasting little longer than one hour to the snow avalanche barriers at Mt. Bjólfur.

This tour is ideal after dinner at Hótel Aldan or Skaftfell Bistro to extend the evening with a interesting but relatively short drive at an schenic view point.

A guided walk up along the south side of Vestdalur river from seashore up to about 200 m high. We cross the river on a footbridge and follow the contour of the hill and the meadow back along some fields where cows, sheep and horses graze. A few nice waterfalls are on the way.

There are diverse subjects to talk about but this is a walk that’s mostly aimed at people wanting to exert themselves a bit and maybe do a bit of photography and look at plants along with remains og archaeological sites from a very diverse periods.

2.5 hours walk with a local guide. Drive from the hotel lobby to the starting point of the walk and back again.

Our rooms are situated in two historical buildings from the turn of the 19th century, which are divided into two hotels; Hótel Aldan and Hotel Snæfell. In these two buildings we offer 18 beautiful rooms, each with its own unique soul and characteristics.

Hotel Aldan
Hotel Aldan used to house the bank of Seydisfjordur for almost a century and before that one of the best hotels in Iceland. All efforts has been made to preserve the historical atmosphere while adding modern convenience.
Due to the flexible architectural layout several rooms can be combined so they either form suites or family rooms for 4 to 6 persons, without adding any extra beds.

Hotel Snæfell
Hotel Snæfell a three story wooden house built in 1908 situated by the mouth of the river “Fjarðará”. It has beautiful views over the small bay in the center of town. This natural estuary is home to birdlife, trout and the occasional Atlantic Grey Seal. The house was first used as the local post office and then in 1943 it was turned into a hotel.

Sea fishing, cruising and bird watching. In the safe hands of a local fisherman, Haraldur Árnason you get the opportunity to fish, process your catch, see the fjords secret treasures and visit the puffins and other seabird’s magnificent settlements. Also possible to have your processed catch served for dinner in Hótel Aldan restaurant. In winter season seabird hunting is available.
